An October Week With Nothing On It

When was the last time you actually noticed a morning?

Not checked the weather on your phone. Noticed it. Stood in it with a cup of coffee and nowhere to be.

October at Sunset Point Estate is a month for the senses, and it starts before anyone else is up.

The morning

Be the first one awake at least once while you're here. It's worth it.

In the early hours, the sun rises on one side of the house while the marine layer settles into the valley below the property, and the whole world underneath you disappears into soft white. You're above it all. It looks like you could step out and walk across it, and for twenty minutes you have the entire thing to yourself, coffee in hand, the clouds slowly burning off below.

People come back inside from that a little quieter than they went out.

The middle of the day

October is harvest season, and San Diego's growing season doesn't really stop, so the markets run all year. Go one morning without a list. Come back with citrus and squash and far too many flowers, and let lunch be made out of it by whoever wanders into the kitchen.

That's where the house earns its keep. Something on the stove all afternoon. Cinnamon and pumpkin and coffee going at the same time. Three people chopping and talking, which is a far easier way to catch up with someone than sitting across from them and trying.

Outside, the sounds are the ones you don't get at home. No traffic. Water moving in the grotto. A screen door. Somebody's kid shouting from the pool. A ball on the court, badly hit, followed by laughing.

The evening

Then the light turns, and everything stops.

Golden hour here is the reason for the name. The sky goes peach, then copper, and the whole property takes on that warm low glow for the better part of an hour. Wherever people have got to during the day, this is when they come back. Some in the hot tub, some on the terrace, someone still holding a mug from this morning.

It's the hour that does the real work of a family holiday. Not the activities. This.

Afterward, San Diego in October is still mild enough to eat outside, and the evening goes where it goes. Cards. The movie theater. Somebody's story that turns into three more.

What you take home

Nobody comes back from a week like this with a highlight reel. They come back having had four conversations they'd been putting off for a year, and a house full of people who feel like themselves around each other again.

That's what the unclaimed hours are for. We just make the room for them.

So, one question before you plan your October around the usual: when everyone's in the same place with nothing to do, who do you most want in the room?
